The method

How Botswana PAYE is actually calculated

The single most common misunderstanding about income tax is the belief that earning more can push your whole salary into a higher rate. It cannot.

Income is sliced into bands

Your annual taxable income is divided into bands. Each slice is taxed only at that band’s own rate.

Only the top slice pays the top rate

A raise never costs you money. Only the pula above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate — never the whole salary.

Pension comes off first

Approved pension contributions are deducted before the bands are applied, so every pula contributed reduces what gets taxed.

The cheapest tax saving most employees never claim

A contribution to an approved superannuation or pension fund is deducted from your income before PAYE is worked out. You are not losing that money — it moves into your own retirement fund, and the tax you would have paid on it stays with you.

Questions

Botswana PAYE questions, answered

On a marginal basis. Your annual taxable income is split into bands and each band is taxed at its own rate. For a resident, the first BWP 48,000 is taxed at 0%, the next slice at 5%, and so on up to 27.5% on income above BWP 400,000. Your whole salary is never taxed at your top rate.

No. This is the most persistent myth about income tax. Only the portion of your income above a threshold is taxed at the higher rate. A raise always leaves you with more money after tax than before.

Yes, provided the fund is an approved superannuation or pension fund. The contribution is deducted from your income before PAYE is applied, so it reduces your taxable income directly. The deduction is capped at 15% of remuneration. Use the estimator above to see what your own contribution saves each month.

Residents receive a zero-rated first band on the initial BWP 48,000 of taxable income. Non-residents do not — tax starts at 5% from the first pula. Above that, both follow the same band structure. Residency for tax purposes is a technical test, so confirm your status rather than assuming it.

No. It applies the standard bands to a single employment income and an approved pension contribution. Housing, vehicle and other benefits in kind, allowances, terminal payments and secondary employment all affect your actual liability. If any of those apply to you, talk to us for a proper calculation.

Yes. We register businesses for PAYE with BURS, set up payroll deductions correctly from the first pay run, and manage BURS correspondence on your behalf. See our Tax & BURS Compliance service.
